ABOUT THE WATCH

"The St. Louis Schools Watch was founded on the premises that parental and community involvement are needed for good schools to flourish, and that public participation is a cornerstone of democracy. The Watch offers information and analysis that we hope contributes to a public debate over what changes are necessary to improve St. Louis public schools, and what works."

COPE recommends Boykins, Haas

By Antonio D. French

Filed Wednesday, June 21 at 11:56 PM

The St. Louis City Teachers' Union Committee on Political Education (COPE) has recommended that the union endorse State Rep. Amber Boykins for state senate.

COPE also recommended former school board member Bill Haas be endorsed in his campaign against State Rep. Rodney Hubbard. We are told that Hubbard never showed up for his scheduled interview with the teachers.

It has been prematurely reported by another website that Local 420 has already endorsed. The union's executive board is not bound to accept the committee's recommendation. Local 420 is expected to announce its full list of endorsements later this week.

Here is a video of all five of the candidates running for state senate discussing the state of St. Louis Public Schools. The candidates are State Reps Amber Boykins and Yaphett El-Amin, former State Rep. Derio Gambaro, former Alderman Kenny Jones, and college professor Jeff Smith.

This video was taped Tuesday morning at a debate hosted by the RCGA. See more videos at www.pubdef.net.

Even though that was an extremely articulate and obviously well thought out thesis, would you mind elaborating a bit, Anony?

The picture she paints with the public school issue is that she's better qualified on that issue than jeff because she's a black women from "the north side" and surely a white man doesnt understand the black struggle or how to fix the problem. Jeff's qualified. He didnt grow up black but what would make a northsider think they understand how to run the southside??? Keep that north bull north.... atleast jeff spends time on the north at the boys club, I havent seen either of those ladies down here doin anything!

Boykins is doing her stuff. She is fit for the crown. Why you poeple vote for Jeff who moved form the outskirts of Missouri into St. Louis, just so he could run for senate. Russ Carnahan, His former component endorsed him because he didn't want the embarrasment, so why come to the city? We want Amber or El- Amin, a rep from the northside that can relate to all groups of people!

Stay strong Holly, and remember we want a strong and effective leader for the 4th district.

s. chester

Are you a component or an opponent of Holly Boykin’s earned media team?

Just like Jeff Smith was a “component” of Russ Carnahan?

I am sorry for the low blow about spelling but that is one cool word mix-up

Amber and Bill were some of the first to join in with the teachers union in their support of Donna Jones and Peter Downs. Though this may be a coincidence but it probably just shows that they think the same way about educating children in the city public schools. That could be why the Teachers union COPE chose to endorse them

Boykins is the best. Like I said she is for the people and serious. She's here to make a difference.

Smith should go back to where he came from and wait until 2008. We want Boykins or El- Amin, a representave who can relate to all groups of people.

We really want Boykins, she is for the public and the people as a whole.

Brain Harris pick up your face because I don't get paid by Boykins, just she represents me and my district extremely good!!!

By the way this is S. CARTER

Who is s. carter??? You just sound like a black who doesnt want to give a whiteman a good look at. If boykins backing for the public schools was so thick and great then that says alot about her because the system is far worse now then it was 8 years ago when she go in office, wouldnt you agree... or would that affect your paycheck? Look, All im saying is you need to see both sides, El-amin has fought harder than boykins, now thats the truth, Im not saying I dont like boykins, I just look at the facts! I wish you were OPEN to look at both sides, the northside blacks and the southside whites, I believe Jeff smith has a good shot at getting into office, look at his track record, look at what he's doing, It looks to me like he's been building himself for office, Now its late and im tired, so good night

Why would anyone choose an absentee Representative over a current educator, public school founder, and community leader, like Jeff Smith, on an education issue?
