ABOUT THE WATCH

"The St. Louis Schools Watch was founded on the premises that parental and community involvement are needed for good schools to flourish, and that public participation is a cornerstone of democracy. The Watch offers information and analysis that we hope contributes to a public debate over what changes are necessary to improve St. Louis public schools, and what works."

As a teacher in the SLPS, I am curious that if the followers that C. Williams left in St. Louis will bolt like he did. Julius Penn at Cleveland was Williams golden boy and a friend from Chicago and Williams bought him down here, gave him a salary of over 100 thousand and several extra paid (at least 10 per month) days off so he could fulfill his duty working for the national guard. If you think I am wrong, ask anyone who works at Cleveland how often Penn was actually there (or on time at 730 and not strolling in at 9:00) and I have seen him only once during the summer move to Pruitt.

Those comments sound personal to me…but everything with the SLPS is. I have a child at ROTC and I see Mr. Penn all the time in the school and early. And when my son was having problems he was available even before and after school. You haters work my nerve complaining about what teachers and principals get paid. For so long we have fought for our educators to get higher pay but when they do those who are still underpaid complain because it’s not them…step your game up and work harder and get more educated (it’s brought not bought) and you too can make 100k or more. If you want to complain about money ask how is that certain moving companies still have contracts with the SLPS when they have a personal relationship with a board member (I guess no one is suppose to know about that since Mrs. O’Brien is married…would hate for Mark to find that one out). If an employee has an obligation to the National Guard or Military Reserve most companies do work with them, as they should. So are you telling me that now you are mad because the man is trying to serve his country and help you and your family out.

Talk about comments sounding personal! Anon #2 what exactly are you insinuating? If you are insinuating what I assume you are-how does a comment like that make you a non-hater? This website is supposed to be used for information and comments for discussion, not for taking jabs at people's personal lives. Talk about working the last nerve, I really wish people would stop pointing those kind of fingers and start really working and volunteering their time for the kids. The rest of it is not helpful, not productive and rather vindictive. Don't waste your time-use it wisely. We don't have our kids forever.

So when a teacher takes makes comments about someone else, it isn't personel but when a parent makes a comment is is. How hypocritical.

As for the idea of anonymous comments, I like it, although I hope that they get checked out before they become stories. Anonymous doesn't always make them good leads, sometimes it is payback.

Antonio, I read your blog a lot and am sure you will make the right decision on whether it is a lead, or a lie.

No-no one should be making personal comments. I don't think this should be the forum for that.
I'm not the one that made either comment, so not hypocritical, just pointing out that our time should be used a little more wisely.

The comments about the principal at Cleveland are pertinent because he was hired in at a much higher salary than those who have been principals for years. Also, it is rumored that he is Creg Williams nephew. Antonio can check that one out. It is reported that several Creg Williams hired were his relatives, and he planned to hire in new principals at much higher salaries than those who have been through "hell and high water" doing their best to keep the ship afloat.

One Ph.D. left the Human Resource Department sickof being forced to hire his incompetent relatives and cronies over highly qualified personnel.

One thing Antonio should check out is the difference in the degrees and certification of Williams and Bourisaw. Her degrees are from distinguished universities with presitigious education programs. Some of his were on line from unknown and undistinguished schools. He couldn't even produce his superintendency certification according to one source. But Antonio should investigate all of these claims.

Anonymous #2, your comments are personal attacks on the writer above you. How hypocritical to claim someone else's comments sound personal when yours are vicious.

Good! He is gone. Sorry he has a sick uncle to care for.
Can we send Irons and Johnson to relieve him and give us a rest from their greed?

Williams has said that he has a sick uncle that he cares for every weekend. It was often rumored that he left town on many Fridays.

I'm all for merit pay! I hear Ladue has a merit pay system. How's that working out? Nonetheless, if there are any teachers out there who are making more than 100k, please let me know in which district you teach.

PS: And while I believe the usage of bought instead of brought was a mere typo and not a result of being under-educated, it still works.

This site is disgusting. It should be extremely easy to verify whether Penn is Williams' nephew (he isn't) as well as whether Williams has a superintendent's certification (he does) and whether his degrees were obtained via an online course (they weren't). The comment regarding whether the senior staff who were fired by the Board will remain in St. Louis is equally asinine. Why should they remain in a city that is mired in low-level debate about everything other than student achievement and that is clearly filled with apathy about issue of substance?

The true test of Mr. Penn's character is whether or not he stays in St. Louis to weather the storm. If he is nothing more than "The Golden Boy" then he'll run back to Chicago where he can be safe. If he's a true man filled with any substance he'll take a stand and show everyone in St. Louis he is "the man" he claims to be.

I wonder if anonymous #2 is julius penn, or perhaps has a personal relationship with him, because that would explain where he was when he was not at Cleveland. i can give antionio a list of parents and teachers who had to wait days to find mr. penn. on 2/14 twenty cadets assaulted 3 asian cadets during muster. The three students were taken by ambulance to the hospital. The students suffered head fractures, it took several custodians to clean up all the blood. The three asian students were sent to another school, the bad twenty, not a thing. Where was he, no one knew. His national guard duty is not in question, he is entitled to that time off, but if you subtract those days, you will find that he was still gone more than he was there. Being part of a large military family I have great respect for our troops. Unlike mr penn my family members are not in his unit moving furniture, they are actually in the field, putting their lives on the line in reserve units. This is a far cry from logistics. I know of many military families to would love to have their loved ones trade reserve and guard assignments with mr. penn.
The most important things that he should address is, when a teacher reported that two female students were talking about killing Ms. A, he did nothing, the girls went to break a students arm, in gang fight. When Ms. L was pushed by a student, he did not even file an incident report, because he was not there, the student went and pushed Mr. S. the next week. Why did he tranfer out all the female science teachers and replaced them with males, even though the females had more seniority than any of the males. This is sexual discrimination, all the female teachers were tenured and certified from well known universities. Why did he allow student that threw bottle at mr. A, to remain in mr. a's class. Because he was not there. Why were student n, allowed to cut class for 30 days and spend that time in main office. Why were so many grades changed to keep up the numbers on the graduation list. How can a student C be absent a almost all the second semester and still pass all classes with an "A". Why did he stand up at a staff meeting and tell teacher that they better have proof, because it was their word against the students. Those of you that teach know that regardless of the students and teachers it is the principal that sets the tone for a school. you can walk inside a school and listen you can see the type of leadership. we saw Vashon on the news, yet the same items at cleveland were swept under the rug. Do we really need to ask why?

Too many of the principals are not professional enough to seperate their personal feelings from Professional evidence about teachers.

Merit pay would be used as a reward in this system for snitches and suck ups.

Really, I have worked in a system where it worked great. SLPS is not the kind of system, with the nepotism and favoritism it would not be distributed fairly.

Anyone remember that couple who wanted to give a reward to the outstanding math teacher of the year? Why hasn't anyone asked what happened to the award...I'll tell ya. The underhanded way it was given to a buddy of the person who was evaluating the teachers made the couple pull out for the next 4 years which is what they intended.

You know these things if you have been around long enough and pay attention.

Complain all ya want...not gonna change the way things are done until you shake some of those secreataries and long time employees from their purches downtown.

Well, there is nothing more to say about the " Golden Boy", he's gone! Here's Cleveland once again starting over and handing the principalship to someone else who doesn't deserve it.
